  16. <p>     Visionaries are possessed creatures, men and women in the
  17. thrall of belief so powerful that they ignore all else--even
  18. reason--to ensure that reality catches up with their dreams.
  19. The vision may be the glory-driven daring of a Saddam Hussein,
  20. who foolishly tried to extend his rule by conquest and plunder,
  21. or the seize-the-day bravery of a Boris Yeltsin, who struggled
  22. to free a society from seven decades of iron ideology. But
  23. always behind the action is an idea, a passionate sense of what
  24. is eternal in human nature and also of what is coming but as
  25. yet unseen, just over the horizon.

  27. <p>     A generation ago, social theorist Marshall McLuhan
  28. proclaimed the advent of a "global village," a sort of
  29. borderless world in which communications media would transcend
  30. the boundaries of nations. "Ours is a brand-new world of
  31. allatonceness," he wrote. "`Time' has ceased, `space' has
  32. vanished. We now live in...a simultaneous happening."
  33. McLuhan underestimated the enduring appeal of the status quo and
  34. the stubborn persistence of the petty side of human nature. The
  35. fusion of television and satellites did not produce
  36. instantaneous brotherhood, just a slowly dawning awareness of
  37. the implications of a world transfixed by a single TV image.
  38. </p>
  39. <p>     It took another visionary, and the band of dreamers and
  40. opportunists he gathered around him, to demonstrate that McLuhan
  41. was wrong only temporarily. In 1991, one of the most eventful
  42. years of this century, the world witnessed the dramatic and
  43. transforming impact on those events of live television by
  44. satellite. The very definition of news was rewritten--from
  45. something that has happened to something that is happening at
  46. the very moment you are hearing of it. A war involving the
  47. fiercest air bombardment in history unfolded in real time--before
  48. the cameras. The motherland of communism overthrew its
  49. leaders and their doctrine--before the cameras. To a
  50. considerable degree, especially in Moscow, momentous things
  51. happened precisely because they were being seen as they
  52. happened.

  54. <p>     These shots heard, and seen, around the world appeared
  55. under the aegis of the first global TV news company, Cable News
  56. Network. Contrary to the dictum of former U.S. House Speaker Tip
  57. O'Neill that "all politics is local," CNN demonstrated that
  58. politics can be planetary, that ordinary people can take a deep
  59. interest in events remote from them in every way--and can
  60. respond to reportage in global rather than purely nationalistic
  61. terms.

  63. <p>     Back in CNN's infancy, when he was dismissed as
  64. crackbrained and soon to be bankrupt, Ted Turner sensed the
  65. wonders to come. "I am the right man in the right place at the
  66. right time," he said. "Not me alone, but all the people who
  67. think the world can be brought together by telecommunications."
  68. The years since, and most especially the one just past, have
  69. demonstrated how emphatically he was right. For influencing the
  70. dynamic of events and turning viewers in 150 countries into
  71. instant witnesses of history, Robert Edward Turner III is TIME's
  72. Man of the Year for 1991.
